Most families mean to have more of these moments and never quite get around to it.
This is the plan I use myself: four elements, one page, a five-minute read, repeatable every week.
The video below tells you where it came from and how I use it.
The four elements of a family council:
Plus 3 optional touches that turn a meeting into a tradition: a family cheer, a song, a three-word family motto. Miss a week? You get a do-over. Start again.
- A regular day and time.
- The one decision that makes this happen at all. Pick it once, keep it, and the rest gets easier.
- Mom or Dad teaches a principle.
- A few minutes on something that matters, in your own words, or borrowed from wherever you find good ideas.
- A fun activity together.
- A game, a puzzle, an outing, a bike ride: whatever your family actually enjoys doing side by side.
- A treat.
- Small, assigned in advance, and the part everyone remembers.

I'm Dr. Paul Jenkins, a Positivity Psychologist.
I have more than 30 years in clinical practice working with couples and families, the same 30 years behind the videos on Live On Purpose TV where this agenda's ideas come from. This is the same agenda I've used with my own family and taught for years. It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be regular. I'm giving it away because a family council is easier to start with a page in hand than a blank Sunday night.
Just let me know where to send it.
